The specialty of internal medicine dealing with the cardiovascular system, which aims to treat and prevent many, often life-threatening, conditions. Rhythm disturbances, diseases of the coronary arteries, abnormalities of the heart valves, high blood pressure diseases, inflammatory diseases of the heart muscle and pericardium, and abnormalities of blood lipids all belong to the scope of cardiology. Countless non-invasive procedures help establish the diagnosis: for example, EKG, stress EKG test, heart ultrasound, 24-hour blood pressure and EKG monitoring.
